Red Balloon

By Bianca Mazziotti

I stared up at that big shiny, red balloon.

       It glistened in the sunlight.
I stared up at that big, shiny, red balloon.
It glistened in my eyes and I glistened too.
I stared up at that big, shiny, red balloon.
Squinting as I smiled, it was a good day.
I stared up at that big, shiny, red balloon.
Running as it dragged behind me, laughter bubbling up.
I stared up at that big, shiny, red balloon.
Not ready for this moment to end.
I stared up at that big, shiny, red balloon.
As his large hand squeezed my shoulder,
I stared up at that big, shiny, red balloon.
       Unable to release my breath
I stared up at that big, shiny, red balloon.
Watching his large hand take a pin and pop it.
I stared up into his eyes.
I felt no warmth as he grabbed my hand and walked me inside.
